Description

Virtual HR Compliance Specialist (Remote)

Helping Teams Do the Right Thing, the Right Way

Let’s face it: HR compliance isn’t flashy. But it matters—a lot. When it’s done right, things just work. People get paid on time, policies stay fair, and everyone knows where the lines are (without feeling boxed in).

That’s where you come in.

As our Virtual HR Compliance Specialist, you’ll help keep our remote team aligned, informed, and protected. You’ll work behind the scenes to make sure our HR systems run smoothly—but trust us, your work will be felt across every corner of the company.

What Your Day Actually Looks Like

Ever had to untangle a confusing PTO policy? Or update an employee handbook that hasn’t been touched since 2019? Yep, we’ve been there.

Here’s what you’ll really do day to day:

  • Review and refresh policies so they’re current, fair, and make sense to actual humans.
  • Keep tabs on labor law updates across states (and countries).
  • Guide managers through tricky situations: terminations, accommodations, audits—you name it.
  • Establish systems to help us anticipate and address issues before they escalate into problems.
  • Support remote team compliance with training, reminders, and easy-to-follow processes.

Real People, Real Wins

When our last HR compliance specialist, Lena, revamped our onboarding process, new hires stopped asking, "Wait, where's that form again?" Everything became click-and-go.

When Carlos caught a missed state tax registration, we fixed it before the fine hit. That one save? Worth every bit of diligence.

You won’t be a name buried in a spreadsheet here. Your work will show up in everyday wins—and yes, the occasional Slack emoji storm of gratitude.

Who This Role’s Really For

Let’s be honest. Some folks think compliance is dry. But if you love solving real-world puzzles and keeping things clean behind the scenes, this role might be your sweet spot.

You’ll thrive here if:

  • You’re curious. You don’t just accept rules—you want to know why they exist.
  • You’re organized. Like, color-coded-calendar-level organized.
  • You’re comfortable with nuance. HR issues rarely come in black and white.
  • You’ve got backbone. You’re not afraid to speak up when something’s off.
  • You know remote work. Whether you’ve done it for years or just picked it up, you get it.

Some Tech You’ll Touch

Don’t worry, you won’t be buried in outdated HR systems. We keep our tools modern, simple, and synced:

  • BambooHR for core HR ops
  • Notion & Google Drive for docs and handbooks
  • Slack for fast communication
  • Loom for async training videos
  • HRIS integrations and maybe a little Zapier magic

Got tools you love? We’re open. If it makes our team smoother, we want to hear about it.

How We Keep Compliance Human

Remote work can make it feel like you’re solving puzzles alone in the dark. We get it. That’s why we keep things connected:

  • Weekly team huddles to sync up and share wins
  • Monthly check-ins focused only on how you’re doing
  • Open calendar policy with our People Ops lead

Need to talk something out? You’ll never get brushed off.

Let’s Talk Experience

We care more about how you think than what your last job title was. That said, here’s what will help you hit the ground running:

  • 3+ years working in HR compliance, ideally for a remote or distributed team
  • Experience interpreting federal, state, and local labor laws
  • Confidence in writing or revising HR policies and employee handbooks
  • Familiarity with HR audits, FMLA, ADA, EEOC regulations, and employment classifications
  • Strong written communication (we’re async-first, so clear writing matters)

Got a certification like PHR, SHRM-CP, or similar? Awesome. If not, no worries—your experience speaks louder than acronyms.

What You’ll Earn (Beyond the Paycheck)

Annual salary: $124,500

But money’s just one part of it. Here’s what else you can count on:

  • 100% remote: Work from anywhere (with solid Wi-Fi)
  • Flexible schedule: We care about results, not punching clocks
  • Health benefits: Medical, dental, vision—the works
  • Tech stipend: Upgrade your desk setup, no questions asked
  • Generous PTO: We want you to unplug (seriously)
  • Annual learning budget: Grow your career while on the job

Where You Fit in the Bigger Picture

Compliance isn’t just about ticking boxes. It’s about protecting people, building trust, and creating systems that support the humans behind the work.

That’s how we see it. That’s how you’ll lead it.

Your role shapes the employee experience—not just in onboarding, but every step of the way. When policies feel fair, transparent, and consistent? People feel safer, more empowered, and more engaged.

That’s the real impact.

Questions You Might Be Asking

What time zone do I need to be in?
We work across time zones, but this role leans on North American hours. You don’t have to be in the U.S., but overlapping with Eastern to Pacific time is essential.

What’s the team like?
Think of us as the "no-drama, get-things-done" crew. We respect boundaries, lift each other up, and laugh often. If you like kind humans with high standards, you’ll feel at home here.

Will I have support?
Yes! You’ll report to our Director of People Operations and collaborate closely with payroll, legal, and department heads. You’ll also get plenty of room to take the lead.

Ready to Make Compliance Feel Human?

If you’ve read this far, you already care about the details. That’s a great sign.

This role gives you space to do meaningful work, not just keep up appearances. You’ll help build systems that work for real people, in real situations.

And you’ll do it from wherever you feel most focused, energized, and human.

Sound like your kind of thing? Let’s talk.
